What is a TransformerA transformer is a electrical piece of equipment that is design to convert alternating current (AC) from one voltage to another voltage. Transformers has no moving parts and under normal operating conditions, provide a long and trouble free life. How does a Transformer worksThe simplest of transformers has two or more coils of insulated wire wound on a laminated steel core. When voltage is applied to one coil, which is called the primary, it magnetizes the iron core. Then voltage is induce to the other coil, called the secondary, or the output coil. The change of voltage between the primary and secondary is determined by the turns ratio of the two coils. Transformers can provide a large range of voltage from just one input coil by using separate windings on the secondary side. Transformers can supply a complete systems with all of their voltage requirement from one source. Transformers come in all sizes from the inside of a microphone to huge units used to interconnect large portions of national power grids. Most of us are familiar with the transformers that provide us with electricity in our homes and business. Electricity is produced depends on the number of times the coil is wound around the core. The more time it wound around, the higher the voltage. If the input coil has more loops and the output coil has a couple of loops, the input coil will be a high voltage than the output coil this is called a "step-down transformer. If the output coil has more voltage it called a "step-up transformer". Remember, when purchasing a transformer, not all manufacturer produce quality energy efficiency transformer like Acme Transformer does. Today, Acme Electric Corporation consists of three divisions: Aerospace, Electronics, and the Power Distribution Products Division which is located in Lumberton, North Carolina. The Power Distribution Products Division manufacturers a vast array of stock catalog products for AC and DC power distribution, regulation and control applications.
